Mug Rug and Placemat
Collect
One piece of polar fleece for backing.
About six pieces of fabric you like.
Cut
One 6.5” square of polar fleece for the mug rug.
Strips of about eight different fabrics. These do not have to be straight and can be between 2.5” and 1” wide.
Construct
- Lie one piece of fabric diagonally across the square of polar fleece, right side up.
- Lie the next piece of fabric on top of the first, right sides together. Line up the top fabric with the under fabric along one side so you can just see the under fabric.
- Rule a line or pin the top fabric about ¼” from the side you have lined up.
- Sew the fabrics to the polar fleece along the ruled line.
- Fold out the top fabric and press it down.
- Lie the next piece of fabric on top of the second piece, right sides together. Line up the top fabric with the under fabric along one side so you can just see the under fabric.
- Repeat step 3 to step 5.
- Continue repeating steps 2-5 until you have covered one side of the square.
- Now go back to the centre strip of fabric and fill the other side of the square of polar fleece until the whole piece is covered.
- Turn over the block to the wrong side.
- Rule a square on the polar fleece using a template or square ruler.
- Sew along this line to make a square.
- Use pinking shears to cut around neatly about ¼” outside the sewn line.
- Turn over your mug rug and see the magic.
Variations
To make the matching placemat, follow the instructions to step 11 on four separate squares of polar fleece. Then join them as follows:
Trim each block about ½” outside the ruled square.
With right sides together, join two blocks together then the other two blocks together.
Iron the seams open from the right side.
Sew the two rows of two together to form a square of four patches.
Cut a piece of backing fabric large enough to cover the whole placemat.
Lie the placemat onto the backing fabric right sides together.
Sew the placemat to the backing fabric about ½” from the outside but leave about a 3” gap not sewn. See photo at right.
Trim the excess backing fabric off.
Turn the placemat inside out through the gap.
Close the gap with hand sewing.
Iron the placemat.
Sew a border around the placemat about ½” from the edge.
The placemat would be wider if six squares were used.
Notes and Tips
It is probably easier if you don’t use very heavy fabrics.
